Mission
The European Intelligence Academy (EIA) aims to:
- Advance the intelligence profession by setting standards, building resources, sharing knowledge within the intelligence field, and promoting a strong intelligence culture in Europe and its liberal-democratic partners;
- Promote cross-border research and scholarship cooperation between intelligence scholars in Europe and North America, as well as with scholars in other parts of the world;
- Highlight the work of emerging postgraduate and undergraduate scholars in the intelligence studies field, and provide a forum for them to exchange ideas and pursue relevant research projects;
- Develop and disseminate intelligence studies curricula among universities, as well as promote best practices for pure and applied intelligence;
- Become the premier virtual venue for collaboration in addressing collabroative intelligence instruction in higher-education institutions, government agencies and think tanks.
Executive Committee
Director: Dr. John M. Nomikos directs the Research Institute for European and American Studies (RIEAS). He is also Chairman of the Mediterranean Council for Intelligence Studies (MCIS), Chairman of the Greek Intelligence Studies Association (GISA), and Founding Editor of The Journal of Mediterranean and Balkan Intelligence (JMBI). He is Assistant Professor at Webster University (Athens Campus), and Visiting Scholar at the John Naisbitt University in Serbia and the University of Rome (Tre) in Italy. Dr. Nomikos specializes in transatlantic intelligence studies, intelligence reform, and national security architecture.
Deputy Director - Europe: Dr. Thomas Wegener Friis is Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, Director of the Center for Cold War Studies and serves on the advisory board of the university’s Master of Arts program in Intelligence and Cyber Security Studies (MISC). He is affiliated with the Institute for National and International Security (INIS) and is a guest professor at the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Studies (ICES) at the European University Flensburg. He is co-founder of the Need to Know conference series, Executive Director of the International Intelligence History Association and Deputy Editor of “National Security and the Future”, as well as a Member of the Scientific Council of the Journal Aparat Represji w Polsche Ludowej 1944-1989. His main research interests are intelligence history, European intelligence studies, as well as minorities and securities.
Deputy Director - North America: Dr. Joseph Fitsanakis is Professor of Intelligence and Security Studies and Director of the Intelligence Operations Command Center at Coastal Carolina University in the United States. He is also Managing Editor of the Journal of European and American Intelligence Studies, member of the History of Information Security Advisory Board for Springer International, and Intelligence Studies Editor of the journal Hiperboreea. Before joining Coastal, Dr. Fitsanakis founded the Security and Intelligence Studies program at King University, where he also directed the King Institute for Security and Intelligence Studies.
Advisory Board
Dr. Darko Trifunovic is Research Fellow and Lecturer in Security Studies at the University of Belgrade in Serbia. He is a former First Secretary at the Permament mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to United Nations and Advisor to the State Secretary for War Crimes of the Republic of Srpska for Terrorism and Violence. Since 2005, he has been an Advisor to the Minister of Police of the Republic of Srpska, BIH. Dr. Trifunovic is the representative of Serbia and Montenegro to the International Strategic Studies Association (ISSA) among other professional bodies.
Dr. Stephan Blancke is a political scientist whose research focuses on the intelligence and clandestine activities of North Korea and China. Previously he worked in an Intelligence and Analysis Unit in the UK Home Office and was a researcher at King’s College in London. He is a contributor to Jane's Intelligence Review, Intelligence Online, NK News and others. Since 2022, he has been an Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London.
Dr. Renato Caputo is Vice President of the Italian Criminological Register (Albo Nazionale Criminologi).
Dr. Shlomo Shpiro is Director of the Intelligence Studies Program at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. He is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Salford and the University of Birmingham. He specializes in the fields of intelligence, terrorism and security, combining research on technology and security policies with emphasis on crisis management and communication, counter terrorism, social resilience, border security and internal security.
Ms. Anna Abelmann is the Executive Director of the International Intelligence History Association (IIHA), which is based in Würzburg, Germany.
Mr. Keshav Mazumdar CPO, CRC, ASC, CMAS, ATO, has been involved in military and civilian intelligence and security practice and research for over a decade. His areas of specialization include anti-terrorism, social network analysis, intelligence-led policing, terrorist profiling, terrorist threat assessment, and counterintelligence. He has been certified as an Antiterrorism Officer by the S2 Safety and Intelligence Institute in the USA and is currently serving as Senior Vice President of the Antiterrorism Accreditation Board (ATAB-USA).
